Direct Port Delivery (DPD)

Joining the DPD program has big operational and financial benefits. The biggest benefit is that cargo dwell time has gone down a lot, with clearance cycles often going from several days to less than 48 hours. This faster process means cheaper logistical costs because it gets rid of CFS-related fees for handling, storage, and secondary transit. As a result, firms can make their supply chains more predictable, which lets them use leaner inventory models and plan production more quickly.

• To be eligible for the DPD program, an importer must have a history of high compliance and operational capabilities. Customs authorities give this classification to a company based on strict standards that say it must:
• Has an Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) accreditation that is still good, which means they are a reliable and safe partner in the supply chain.
• To use facilitated routes, you need to import at least a certain amount of goods each year, usually 100 TEUs.
• Keeps a perfect record of following the rules, with no major customs or regulatory violations.
• Shows that it has a well-established logistics system that can quickly get cargo out of port ports.

The DPD framework has been fully put into place at all of India's main container handling ports so that its benefits can be used by key business and industrial centers. This comprises important places like Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai, and Kolkata, to name a few.

• All the important information from the Import General Manifest (IGM).
• Proof of paying customs duty.
• Proof of transportation and gate pass arrangements.

Is it possible for a new importer to apply for DPD?

A new importing company may be eligible for DPD status if it can show that it has strong internal controls and can ensure that it will meet the specified volume and compliance standards. A full application that explains these qualities is very important.

What if my container is kept for inspection?

If a DPD-tagged container is chosen for customs inspection, the inspection takes place at a special area at the port terminal to keep the expedited timetable as short as possible. It is only in rare circumstances when a CFS transfer happens when a lot of analysis is needed.

Is DPD an option for LCL (Less than Container Load) shipments?

The DPD plan is only for Full Container Load (FCL) shipments. LCL cargo needs to be de-consolidated at a CFS, which doesn't work with the DPD concept of direct delivery.
